Security Image Register (SIR) Overview
The Security Image Register (SIR), managed by the International Optical Security and Technology Association (IOTA), is a global database for registering holographic images and other optically variable devices (OVDs). Operated by the Counterfeiting Intelligence Bureau (CIB) under strict security measures compliant with ISO14298, the SIR protects copyright and supports secure authentication in security printing.
Key Features
Purpose: Ensures new OVD designs are unique by checking for copyright infringement, allowing registration only after clearance.
Access: Free for IOTA members; non-members pay £500. Law enforcement can verify suspect OVDs.
History: Established in 1993 as the Hologram Image Register (HIR), rebranded in 2023 to include all OVDs, with over 10, 000 registrations.
Upgrades: Improved in 2022 for faster online registration and copyright verification.
Impact: Prevents counterfeiting, supports legal action against counterfeiters, and is often required for government tenders (e.g., passports, central banks).
The SIR remains the only global system dedicated to securing OVD designs for authentication purposes.
